Dark Sky Week 2024

Park District supports Dark Sky Week

The Plainfield Park District is proud to support Dark Sky Week April 2-8 to draw attention to light pollution, promote simple solutions to mitigate the issue, and celebrate the irreplaceable beauty of a natural night.

The Park District Board of Commissioners officially passed resolution 2024-04, a resolution declaring April 2-8, 2024 as Dark Sky Week at its regular board meeting held March 21, 2024 at the Prairie Activity & Recreation Center.

The Board of Commissioners of the Plainfield Park District inspire and encourage its businesses and residents to become more aware of the adverse effects of light pollution and to implement dark sky-friendly lighting practices consistent with DarkSky International’s principles.

Artificial light at night has varying negative effects on not just humans, but birds, trees and plants, nocturnal pollinators and crime as well.  The slides below have more information, as well as principles for responsible lighting.
