The Plainfield Park District Board of Commissioners passed a resolution honoring the memory of Wadee Al Fayoumi at their regular board meeting held February 12 at the Prairie Activity & Recreation Center. Fayoumi was a 6-year-old Plainfield boy who tragically lost his life in a violent circumstance in 2023.
To commemorate Wadee, the District will name the sensory playground on the east side of Van Horn Woods in his remembrance. This dedication reflects the District’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming community.
The resolution was introduced following a petition from Mohammed Faheem, President of American Muslims Assisting Neighbors (AMAN), during the Park District’s January board meeting. Supported by community members, the initiative sought to memorialize Wadee in a way that promotes accessibility and joy for all children.
During the February meeting, Wadee’s mother, Shaheen Hannan, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Park District and the broader community for their support. Her presence served as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact this dedication will have in keeping Wadee’s spirit alive.
“This resolution is a testament to our community’s compassion and commitment to standing together in both sorrow and hope,” said Mohammed Faheem. “By naming this playground in Wadee’s honor, we are ensuring that his memory continues to bring happiness to children and families for years to come.”
Plainfield Park District Executive Director Carlo Capalbo added, “We are honored to dedicate this playground to Wadee’s memory. Our hope is that it will serve as a space where all children, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of play.”
Plainfield Park District Board of Commissioners President Bill Thoman echoed this sentiment, stating, “This dedication reflects our commitment to fostering a strong and supportive community. Wadee’s memory will live on through the laughter and joy of the children who play here.”
The sensory playground at Van Horn Woods is designed to be an inclusive space where children of all abilities can play, explore, and connect. The dedication aligns with the Park District’s mission to provide welcoming and accessible recreational spaces for all residents.
A formal dedication ceremony will be announced soon, inviting the community to gather in remembrance and celebration of Wadee’s enduring spirit.
