Scout’s Summer Fun Hunt

To play, download the app TurfHunt by Locatify available for IOS or Android and available for FREE in the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
(NOTE: This is a location-based game. Challenges are automatically activated using GPS when players enter the activation radius. To play the game, GPS needs to be turned on.)

• TurfHunt is the name of the app to download to your phone.
• This is a location-based game. Challenges are automatically activated using GPS when players enter the activation radius.
• You can exit the game and come back to continue where you left off.

1. Open the app.
2. A global map with map markers will appear. To find Scout’s Summer Fun Hunt, tap the list icon to view a list of treasure hunts nearby.
3. Tap on the Scout’s Summer Fun Hunt icon.
   
4. The game’s intro page will appear. Tap the install button to install game content.
5. Once the download is complete, tap the start button.
6. Enter a player name and tap OK.
7. On the next screen, tap start the game now or invite other players (see step 3 for how to invite other players).

To invite other players to join your private game, send an invitation by tapping on the message/share icon to send an invitation code via text or email.

• •  A link to download the app and an invitation code will be sent to the other players you wish to invite.
  • Once they download and open the app, they need to tap on redeem invitation within the app to play. It will be located towards the bottom of the app screen.

TIP: If you invite other players to join your game, it’s best to start the game when all other teams have joined and are ready to play.

Private games will allow for friendly point competition. You will be able to see the other invited player’s points on the scoreboard by tapping the points/scoreboard icon . Only the members you invite will be able to see your points. 

1. If you have received an invitation to play, tap the link provided.
   • You will be sent to a page that has a unique invitation code for a specific game. 
2. Install the app if you haven’t already.
   • If the app isn’t already installed on your phone, download it for your phone (Android/IOS) before moving forward.
3. When first opening the app, “Redeem Invitation” will appear at the bottom of the app. See sample image.
   
4. Enter your invitation code, or scan the QR code from the same web page
5. Tap the “Redeem” button. The game image will appear.
6. Click the green “Download” button to retrieve the game information.
7. Click the green “Start” button to begin the game.  A list of teams that have joined will appear.

TIP: It’s best to start the game when all other teams have joined and are ready to play.

Private games will allow for friendly point competition. View invited player’s points on the scoreboard by tapping the points/scoreboard icon .
Only the members you invite will be able to see your points. 

The park has not been visited and has challenges to be completed.

Park challenges are complete.

1. Turn your phone volume on to hear the introduction.
2. Tap “Start the game now” when you are ready to play.
   • Challenges will automatically appear in the app when you are in GPS range of the park
3. Once the game has started, look on the map to find the Scout icons with the question marks to determine which park to visit.
   (There is a full list of all participating parks below.)
4. Directions to a park
   1. To get directions to any one park from your current location, tap on the Scout icon to see the park’s name.
   2. Then tap the directions icon , located in the lower right of the app screen.

      • compass icon
      • current location icon
      • map icon , which toggles between a street map view and a satellite map view.
5. When you arrive at a participating park, make sure the app is open and your phone’s GPS is on. Challenges will automatically appear in the app when you are in GPS range of the park. Complete the challenges to earn points. (NOTE: If you skip over a challenge, you cannot go back to complete it.)
6. When all the challenges have been completed for any one park, the icon on the map will change to the image of Scout with a green background , which means that park’s challenges are complete. (NOTE: If you skip over a challenge, you cannot go back to complete it.)

CHALLENGES:

• The total amount of challenges varies at each park.
• For every challenge completed correctly, you win points toward a prize.
• Challenges include memory card games, jigsaw puzzles, multiple-choice questions, or taking a photo.
  • NOTE: Memory card games and jigsaw puzzles are timed. As soon as you touch a panel, the timer begins.
• If you skip over a challenge, you cannot go back to redo it.
• Your accumulated points will appear in the lower-left corner of the app screen. This is also where you can see the scoreboard for other invited players in private games.

POINTS & PRIZES:

We understand that time sometimes gets away from us and you may not be able to visit all the parks before the deadline.
We created different prize levels so even if you only make it to a few parks, you can still earn a prize.

• Earn 25 points to win: Level 1 prize
• Earn 50 points to win: Level 2 prize
• Earn 75 points to win: Level 3 prize
• Earn 100+ points to win an extra bonus prize.
• Prize Coupon & Prize Redemption: As you reach each point level (listed above), a coupon will appear within the app. Save this coupon to your images/photos on your phone.
  When you go to redeem your prize, show the Park District team member the coupon.
  • Each point/prize level has its own coupon.
  • You may earn multiple prize coupons, but only need to show the coupon with the highest points.

Game Start Date: May 24, 2024
Game End Date:  You have through August 31, 2024, to visit the parks and complete challenges for points.

First Day for Prize Pickup: Monday, August 5, 2024
Last Day for Prizes: Monday, September 30, 2024

• You earn at least one point for visiting the park. Some parks are worth more points just to visit.

What devices does TurfHunt work on?

TurfHunt is available for Android and iOS devices, and is compatible with:

• Apple iPhone iOS version 10.0 through to the latest operating system (iOS)
• Android version 4.3 through to the latest Android operating system (OS)
• Apple iPad’s with mobile network connectivity/sim card (WiFi-only models are not compatible with games)

Please note: Mobile devices must have some spare memory to operate effectively and some older devices may function differently. For example:

• Background-location-detection is restricted on some older devices
• Augmented Reality capability is limited to modern devices
• Bluetooth scanning frequency might be reduced on some operating systems to improve battery life

How do I download a game?

Downloading a published game

Once you have downloaded the TurfHunt app you will be presented with a map with different game locations shown. You can click on a marker on the map to view more information about that game, or can switch to a list view of games.

Once you have chosen your game, select the desired language and download the game. Please note some games may have a large file download due to the rich multimedia content so it is recommended to use WiFi when possible.

Some of the games are free while others are available for a small fee which is payable using the default app store payment options. Once you have made your selection, the tour is downloaded onto your device. You can re-download the tours at a later time if need be.

If you lose a network connection while downloading a tour, you can always restart the download once you have a network connection again.

Downloading a game via Invitation Code

Find the “Redeem Invitation” code at the bottom of the TurfHunt home screen (or from the menu) and enter the invitation code that has been provided. This code will then install the correct game onto your device.

What happens to a game in progress if I need to use my phone for other things?

If you need to leave the game for whatever reason, the application will pause. For example, if you get a phone call mid-game, you can answer, and the game will resume when you end the call.  The app will continue to run in the background and resumes if you switch back to the app. To save battery life the GPS is turned off when the screen is turned off.

Can I play a game with a WiFi-Only iPad?

No, unfortunately not. “WiFi-Only” iPad models are not compatible with outdoor treasure hunt games as games require GPS coverage to enable game play. Ensure you have a “WiFi + Cellular” model for playing games on Locatify apps.

Does TurfHunt work everywhere?

In short, yes! Wherever there is GPS, there is TurfHunt.

Does the GPS drain the battery more quickly?

Yes, GPS use will drain the battery quicker than usual. However, GPS is becoming increasingly more used in modern apps, and smartphone manufacturers are taking this into consideration with improved operating systems and battery life.
